Meal Plan Basics – How to Make Your Life More Efficient!

Hello Everyone!

Today I will be talking about how to meal plan to help you save time, money, and improve your health! Meal planning may seem like a daunting task or a headache but it is truly simple. Pick a day where you have 1-2 hours to cook. You can do your shopping on a separate day or the same day if you have time. Play some music and make this time fun instead of another chore.

So let’s get into it!

  1. Determine your TDEE

TDEE refers to your total daily energy expenditure, the number of calories you burn every day. This is based on your age, gender, height, weight, activity levels, and (optional: body fat percentage). Your BMR (basal metabolic rate) is first calculated and then that value is multiplied by your personal rate of daily activity. Since your basal metabolic rate is the number of calories you burn at rest, the TDEE calculation can provide a more accurate picture in terms of calorie consumption. MyFitnessPal is a good app to use if you want to give calorie counting a try. Calorie counting is not the best method for everyone but it is good to do for a while to help you understand portion sizes and their related caloric amount.

Gaining weight

If you’re looking to gain weight, try to adjust your daily calorie consumption so that at the end of the week you are in a caloric surplus. You can start with an extra 200 calories on top of your TDEE and then work your way up to 500 and 700 calories. Be careful with the type of calories you are consuming and do not eat fast food as a way to get more calories. Combine your weight gain journey with a healthy lifestyle and try to exercise regularly!

Losing weight

Losing weight requires the same adjustment to your calorie consumption. For moderate weight loss, reduce your daily calories to around 200-300 less and for a more intense weight loss reduce your calories to 500-600 less. Also, try to incorporate some daily exercise to supplement your weight loss journey. Remember: you can not outrun a bad diet! Do not use your daily exercise as a way to justify extra portions- this is a failing mentality. Focus on your diet as the means to lose weight and exercise as a given.

2. Use a scale

A food scale is a great way to portion out your meal plan and help with cooking. This way is the most accurate and is commonly used by those who are bodybuilding or fitness models. If you are portioning out your breakfast, lunch, and dinner- it can be a headache to measure everything with a measuring cup and can be inaccurate because of the variation of density. For example, if you need to eat around 350 calories for breakfast, it is easy to count one large apple, x grams almonds, x grams of oatmeal, and x millilitres of oat milk! This may seem foreign at first but you will quickly learn to love it!

3. Try new recipes

Do not be afraid of trying out new recipes! Meal plans may seem boring if you’re eating the same meal for 5 days straight. I personally don’t mind eating the same meal often if it tastes good but some people can not stand it. If you are meal planning for 5 days, try to give yourself at least 2 different options for each meal to spice it up. Find new, healthy recipes to try out every week!

Gaining weight

If you are trying to gain weight, you either have a fast metabolism or not much of an appetite no worries! You don’t have to gorge yourself on large meals 5-6 times a day to reach your goals. You need to focus on adding calorie-dense foods to every meal. What does this mean? Calorically dense foods are foods that contain a high amount of calories relative to their weight. This means you don’t have to eat a lot of this food to eat a lot of calories.

For example, 100g macadamia nuts are 708 calories! To be fair, eating 100g of macadamia nuts is surely too much fat and would not be enjoyable but adding in 25g of nuts to your daily oatmeal or yogurt and instantly give you some extra calories without the large serving size. Research into healthy calorically dense foods and try to incorporate some in all your meals.

Losing weight

If you looking to lose weight, you might yourself a fan of some calorically dense foods! Not to worry, you don’t have to start eating out of a baby dish to lose weight, you just need to adjust the types of food you. You need to lean into nutritiously dense low-calorie foods! Compare two slices of pizza and a large salad with a bunch of vegetables and some high protein beans. Not even looking at the calories, which food is providing the biggest nutritious impact? Which food make you feel more full afterwards? Fruits and vegetables are mostly low in calories and nutritiously dense. Try to stay away from the processed food (even the low sodium, low sugar, diet version of things), take-out (and eating out), and focus on eating whole foods- especially vegetables and fruits.

4. Purchase in bulk

Purchasing your food in bulk can help save you a headache when it comes to making your meal plan. Going to places like Costco or the Farmer’s market can prove to be helpful when you starting your home-cooking journey. Research into the lifespan of your fresh food and how to store them to keep them fresh longer! Don’t fall into the trap of buying a bunch of fresh food and then ordering in and letting it spoil. Buy it, cook it, freeze it, store it, and then eat it when you’re ready.

How to Be More Confident In 7 Quick Steps

How to Be More Confident In 7 Quick Steps

Hello Everyone!

Today I will be talking about how to appear more confident in 7 quick steps. Not everyone is born with rock-solid confidence but thankfully it is something we can develop! When it comes to confidence, it is definitely one of the few things you can fake it ’til you make it. It is time to stop mumbling, avoiding eye contact, and slouching when speaking to others and know that you are worthy!

So let’s get into it!

  1. Correct Your Posture

The very first thing you must do is FIX YOUR POSTURE! This means even when you are alone. When we slouch and/or have bad posture when speaking to others, it gives you the appearance of being unsure of yourself, unconfident, and nervous! And not only does it effect people’s perception of you, having bad posture can cause injury to the lower back and neck through strain and stiffness. You can improve your posture through stretching and working out your posterior side. The 6 steps I always use to fix my posture is: (1) pull your shoulders back (comfortably) (2) protrude your chest slightly (3) lift your head to eye level (4) keep your chin level (5) put your weight in the middle to back of your feet (6) fix your pelvic tilt.

If you are used to slouching, fixing your posture may feel slightly uncomfortable for a while but stick to it and eventually it will be second nature!

Here is a great infographic on some posture corrective exercises:

2. Speak Clearly

STOP MUMBLING! It is one thing to have a naturally soft or quiet voice but if you tend to mumble and not finish your thoughts- STOP RIGHT NOW. Have you ever spoke to someone who mumbled and never articulated their words clearly? What did you think of them? Did you think they were knowledgeable, smart, and confident? NO! You thought they were nervous, unsure of themselves, and inexperienced! Is that they way you want to present yourself? Regardless of how smart you are, if you are not able to speak with grace and articulation- it will not show. Think about politicians. A majority of them definitely did not graduate as the top of their class BUT they are able to speak so well, they can win votes regardless of their background.

When fixing your speech, you’ll want to practice by yourself and record to hear how you talk and where you need to improve. Here is a fantastic video from a great youtube channel to fix your speech. Always remember that your thoughts are as worthy as anyone else’s when speaking! Talk up!

3. Eye Contact

Stop looking at your shoes, at the wall, and at anything other than the person speaking to you and the person you are speaking to! When you fail to look someone in their eyes during a conversation, it might actually be quite offensive. People may think their is an issue with them or think you’re rude or nervous- both things we want to avoid. A good rule it to look someone in their eyes for around 5 seconds before you look away for a couple seconds and then look back. It may feel awkward at first and that’s okay! A good way to improve your eye contact in daily life is to wear sunglasses. Don’t rely on this though, but for severe cases, start making strong eye-contact while wearing sunglasses to get used it.

Here is a video on how to make eye contact when you feel awkward about it. Practice makes perfect!

4. Smile More

Don’t be afraid to show off your beautiful smile! This doesn’t mean to be smiling from cheek to cheek every second of the day but rather have a small smile on yourself when interacting with others. Appearing Happy = Appearing Kind = Appearing Confident. Have you seen anyone who seemed happy but unconfident? Seems to be a bit of an oxymoron. Practice in the mirror to find your resting happy face and use it! You’ll appear more confident, kind, and open to interactions.

Think of something happy and keep that smile on yourself throughout your day!

5. Have an Impeccable Appearance

Although confidence should not come from the outside, if you are struggling with being confident you need to be sure you always look your best. This does not mean you have to wear the latest thing Kanye West or Emrata posted on their Instagram but wear what makes YOU feel the best you can feel. When you feel good with what you’re wearing- it will show! I suggest completely gutting your wardrobe to only the pieces that make you feel 100% confident. Have a little fashion show and try on all your clothes! If you put it on and you don’t love it- throw it (donate it preferably)! Be confident in the your skin and clothes and know that you look good. Here is the Audacia fashion board for inspiration!

6. Stop Comparing Yourself

Comparing yourself is the fastest route to depression, anxiety, and lack of confidence. Do you find yourself comparing yourself to everyone who walks by? To people on TV, Instagram, or Facebook? A lot of people can’t help it but just because it’s normal does not mean its healthy.

If you compare yourself to people on social media- you should do a social media cleanse. I suggest cutting down on your social media time everyday (check your screen time in your phone and set limits) until you’re not checking it at all. Go a couple days or weeks without checking your feeds and see how you feel. Use self-affirmations every-time you look in the mirror and build your confidence! Learn that someone is always going to be doing something “better” than you but why does that matter? Does their success, looks, and possessions make them better than you? The answer is always NO. You are you, there has been nothing like you and there will be nothing like you- YOU ARE UNIQUE. So stop comparing yourself to others because they are not you and they could NEVER be you!

Here is a great video on how to stop comparing yourself. Once again- practice makes perfect.

7. Stop Negative Self-Talk

“I feel fat”, “I look so ugly”, “I’m so dumb”. This type of negative self-talk needs to stop immediately (joking or not). Many people find self-deprecating jokes as a way to cope but it is not doing yourself any favours in the long run. This is not to say that some days you won’t feel ugly, fat, or dumb but it is imperative to not joke or dwell in these negative emotions. You are human and you are not going to be happy 24/7-365 but it is essential to combat negative self-talk once it appears. For example, when the thought of you being ugly pops in your mind you need to train yourself to stop and rectify it with a compliment to yourself!

If you think, “I look so ugly” STOP and then say, “I am beautiful and unique and I love my (insert feature)”

You really need to train yourself to stop talking bad about yourself. Do you find confident people constantly talking down about themselves? No- they “boost” themselves up with compliments all time! Every time you pass a mirror, you need to find one thing to compliment yourself about- either an internal or external characteristic!

Nighttime Skin Care For Glass Skin- A Simple 7-Step Regimen!

Hello Everyone!

Today we will be getting into a nighttime skincare routine to achieve “glass skin”. Glass skin has become a recent trend in which the skin on your face is imperfection-less and super dewy, creating the glass look.

Although this has become the trend, it is important to stay realistic in your pursuit of clear skin and not compare yourself to what you see on the internet. Consequently, many images are filtered, edited, and photoshopped before they are posted!

Stay confident in yourself, regardless of the condition of your skin!

Let’s get into it!

1. OIL CLEANSE

The first step in your nighttime routine should be an oil cleanse. An oil cleanse is important in deep cleaning your skin and removing excess sebum, cleaning clogged pores (blackheads, whiteheads), removing makeup and dirt. Apply your cleansing oil and massage your face for at least 45-60 seconds. This is actually very relaxing and gets rid of waterproof makeup with ease! You’ll then add water to emulsify the oil cleanser and wash it off. Implementing oil cleansing in your regular routine is amazing and will eliminate your need to use pore strips! Using regular oil is not the best choice because it is not formulated to emulsify with water. This means it can leave an oil film on your face even after cleansing, and this can cause breakouts.

2. SECOND CLEANSE

The next step is a second cleanse! Depending on your skin type, your cleanser should differ. For oily skin types, I would recommend a foamy cleanser or gel cleanser. Normal skin types can use any type they wish, I would recommend a gel cleanser in summer and a cream/milk cleanser in winter. For dry skin types, a milk or cream cleanser would work best! You will want to do this second cleanse using the 60-second technique that I spoke about in my morning skincare routine post here. This second cleanse is essential in treating the pH of your skin and removing any excess oil that may be left behind. The first cleanse removes the dirt, makeup, and pollutants and the second cleanse truly “cleans” your skin.

3. TONER

As per my morning skincare routine post.

“I will say this first. Toners are not necessary. Most toners act to prep the skin by dampening it to allow you to better absorb your subsequent products BUT most of the time, the action can be replicated by softly patting your face with warm water and applying your next product. Right now, I use a spritz of rose water all over my face after cleansing because of the added anti-inflammatory properties.”

4. SERUM

At this point, you will want to use a serum to address your skincare needs. For dry skin, a hydrating hyaluronic acid or snail mucin serum would be amazing in adding moisture back to the skin. Normal skin can use any toner they wish depending on what they are treating. Oily skin can use a niacinamide serum which is great for reducing oil and reducing acne. For dark spots, hyperpigmentation, or melasma, a vitamin C or an azelaic acid serum is amazing in brightening and reducing hyperpigmentation, respectively.

5. SPOT TREATMENT

If needed, you can apply a spot treatment for acne or some nighttime eye cream at this point.

6. MOISTURIZER

Since it is wintertime, I would recommend using a thick moisturizer for your nighttime routine. This will protect your skin from the drying elements of central heating. If you have a humidifier or do not suffer from dryness in wintertime, I would recommend the Cetaphil moisturizer. Cetaphil is a basic moisturizer for sensitive skin. If you are 20 years old and older, I would recommend introducing a retinol moisturizer in your nighttime routine.

Retinol not only prevents wrinkles but reduces oil production, dark spots, and acne. Using retinol is almost a cure-all and provides most with smooth skin within months. Retinol is a big choice to make, so make sure you spot-test before trying it!

Retinol almost comes with a “retinization” process meaning you will most likely experience dryness and acne for a couple of weeks when starting your retinol product. This is because your skin is increasing its turnover rate, causing pimples to come to the surface and dryness. After this process is over, you will experience smooth, dark-spot and acne-free skin! I highly recommend using one! If you use one you have to make sure your toner and serum ingredients do not conflict with retinol. This means avoiding AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C in those steps.

In my nighttime routine, I now only oil cleanse, second cleanser, moisturizer with retinol, and top it off with rosehip oil. Surprisingly, this routine has brought me better skin than my 10+ step routines in the past, but you must find what works for yourself.

7. OIL

Finally, the last step is oil! Oil is great for sealing in all your products and keeping your skin soft throughout the nighttime. It is important to use the oil after a moisturizer because moisturizers can not penetrate the skin if applied on top of the oil. For oily skin types, I would recommend jojoba oil! Regular skin, I would recommend squalene or argan oil. For dry skin types, a “thicker” oil would be best like almond oil or grape-seed oil. For any skin type, shea butter or rosehip oil are amazing as well. Oils are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E which are great for healing your skin and give you that dewy, glass look!
