How to Love Exercise – Altering Your Mindset and Attitude!

Today I will be speaking about how to love exercise and how to alter your mindset and attitude concerning fitness and working out! Nutrition and exercise can be sensitive topics for many people as they may feel inadequate or incompetent in these areas. Furthermore, they may think their diet and workout routine has a direct connection to their self-worth. Let me clear in my stance- your diet, exercise routine, fitness level, weight, and body do not represent your self-worth. To be fair, your appearance can say a lot about your health but this is not tied down to a certain look or size.

Changing your mindset is not an easy task. To undo years of a toxic mindset will take time and patient to change- so don’t be so hard on yourself!

So let’s get into it!


1. Attacking the Root

If you find yourself hating your workouts and avoid them at all costs, you have to ask yourself why? I challenge you to examine your earliest and most prominent memories around exercise and body image. Write them down and label them with the associated feeling you have.

Example:

My older sister saying she needs to work out to look good in a bikini – I FELT shame

Now, gather these words and write counter thoughts to them.

Example:

Shame -> I feel no shame about my body. I love my current body because it is strong and healthy!

The reason for this activity is to find the roots of your disdain and unhealthy use of exercise and to actively counter them with healthy and positive thoughts. This is not so much a one-and-done act. I encourage you all to keep these positive affirmations handy when you’re feeling down and out!

Furthermore, you need to assess the reasons you work or hate working out! Is it because you hate your body? Is it because the thought of gaining or losing weight terrifies you? Identify the motivation behind your regimen and assure it is coming from a positive place not a place of hate or sadness.

2. Shifting Your Attitude

Once you have identified the roots, it is time to change your attitude.A great quote I saw said, “you can not hate your body into one that you love” and I find that this is so true! You have to unlearn self-loathing and learn self-love! This means wanting to exercise because it is good for your body and will improve your health and fitness level. I recommend that you do some type of movement for a week straight without overanalyzing your body before and after and tracking every single step or calorie you burn. Try to focus on how you feel before, during, and after your workouts.

Focus on your breath, the music, and your thoughts and stop obsessing over how you look! This will bring you closer to the best benefits of exercise! You can completely change your body but you can also reduce your risk of heart disease, improve your mood and mental health, manage your blood sugar levels, improve your sleep quality, and much more!

In contrast, using exercise as a tool to change your body is not a negative thing whatsoever! But if you do not examine and acknowledge the root of any body issues you have, you’ll never love the body you currently have- even if it’s your dream body.

3. Love What You Do

Love what workouts you do! I can not stress this enough! Here is a post about a variety of different exercise routines. Play around and try out different things. If you hate running then simply stop running! There are so many forms of exercise, you are bound to find one that you absolutely love. In addition, there some necessary elements you should have in your workout routine regardless of your routine. This includes cardiovascular exercise, resistance training, and stretching/flexibility training. This will make sure your exercise is beneficial to all parts of your fitness and health!

4. Make It Unique

Make your workout sessions truly your own! This means working out for the duration that you find optimal for yourself. Many national guidelines recommend you work out at least 150 minutes a week (increased or decreased depending on the intensity levels). This can look like, 30 minutes 5 times a week, 50 minutes 3 times a week, 25 minutes 6 times a week, and etc.

Furthermore, work out at times that are convenient to you and where you have the most energy. If you find you hate working out because you have to wake up early to do it- shift it to the evening if possible! You have to realize that you hold all the power when it comes to your workout regimen. Don’t feel pressure from what you see on social media and make your workout routine unique to you because, at the end of the day, that’s who it’s for!

5. Set Goals

If you are working on healing your relationship with exercise, I recommend setting goals that are healthy for yourself. For example, you find yourself overexercising because you want to look a certain way, I would recommend setting goals that do not correspond with your appearance.

Example:

I will decrease my 5km time over the course of the month.

On the other hand, if you have an unhealthy relationship with exercise dealing with your fitness level, I would set goals that do not incorporate things related to that.

Example:

I will work out 3 times this week without tracking my calories.

6. Have Fun!

Don’t forget to have fun when you work out! Being able to move our bodies and test our fitness level is truly a gift.

They are super easy and quick to make and are full of essential vitamins and minerals. These simple tips will ensure your smoothies are always flavourful and healthy! Having a smoothie as a part of your morning routine can be a great start to your day.

So let’s get into it!


  1. Liquid

The liquid part of the smoothie is the component that will control the viscosity (thickness) of your drink. If you prefer a very thick smoothie or a smoothie bowl, add less liquid and if you like a smoothie that is “thinner” add more! For regular smoothies, a good rule of thumb is adding the liquid that reaches up to half to three-quarters of the ingredients inside your blender.

So, should you use water or milk? It is really up to you! To be more specific, if you are looking to gain weight and are not opposed to drinking cow’s milk, adding milk is a great way to bump up your caloric intake a bit. Otherwise, water, juice, coffee, and plant-based milk are delicious additions. Plant-based milk tends to be fortified with essential nutrients as well such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, zinc, or magnesium. These are essential in the health of our bodies!

I personally change depending on what type of smoothie I am making that day. If I am making a richer smoothie with bananas, peanut butter, and cinnamon, I will add plant-based milk and coffee to it! It is on the fruiter side I will use water instead.

2. Greens

Adding some greens to your smoothie is the best way to increase the nutritional impact! A handful of greens is enough to add some extra vitamins. Specifically, dark leafy greens, are a rich source of vitamin B, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, magnesium, antioxidants, calcium, iron, and potassium.

Some greens you can add to your smoothies are spinach, kale, beet greens, swiss chards, arugula, cucumber, or celery. They are super low in calories but provide amazing benefits. I would recommend you buy fresh greens instead of frozen.

3. Fruits

Fruits are the backbone of a great smoothie. Frozen fruit is great and fresh fruit is just as good! Just remember to add some ice when you use fresh fruit to ensure your smoothie is nice and cold! I recommend combining one high sugar fruit with one low sugar (banana and green apple) or a mix of low sugar fruits (berries). Avoid using a bunch of high-sugar fruits in one smoothie! Although fruits are the best type of sugars for our body, we still have to monitor how much we consume. Depending on our personal health, we should be eating around 3-5 pieces of fruit every day. They contain essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibres that keep our bodies happy and healthy!

4. Proteins

Proteins are a vital addition to smoothies to keep you feeling full. Beyond this, protein is crucial for muscle growth, bone health, blood pressure, weight loss, etc. A very easy way to increase your protein content in a smoothie is to add protein powders! There are a bunch of fantastic vegan protein powders but if you want to keep it all-natural, you can add peanut (or other nuts) butter, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, cow’s milk, silken tofu, coconut milk, or chia seeds.

5. Boosters

Finally, boosters include superfoods that have very high vitamin, mineral, and overall nutritional punch! Usually, these superfoods can be added in small quantities can still provide all their amazing health benefits. Consider adding pomegranate seeds, berries, chia seeds, hemp seeds, matcha, acai, bee pollen, avocados, etc. Here is a list of superfoods that you can try to incorporate into your smoothies and overall diet!

Bonus:

Don’t forget flavour while creating your smoothie! Ginger, cinnamon, vanilla extract, turmeric, nutmeg, etc are great (essentially) 0 calories additives to make your smoothie richer and flavourful!

10 Easy and Healthy Snacks To Reach Your Fitness Goals!

Today I will be talking about 10 healthy snacks to help you reach your fitness goals! In a time where UberEats, SkipTheDishes, GrubHub, and PostMates make eating out so accessible, it can be very challenging to want to eat at home. Meal planning is essential in helping you stay on track with eating home-cooked meals! If you have a choice between a $15 Chipotle order or cooking for 40 minutes- the choice is hard (and easy). Therefore, meal planning will take you out of this dilemma and allow you to eat delicious home-cooked meals every day without having to think about it or spend hours in the kitchen.

Meal planning is essential but what happens when you get hungry between meals? Easy and healthy snacks are great to help you avoid low-nutrition foods like chips, cookies, or sweets! It is imperative to not let chips and cookies become your “fear food”. Enjoy your treats! But, if it is your goal to adopt a healthy lifestyle, opt for eating them less often or swapping them for the healthy snack alternatives in this list.

So let’s get into it!


  1. Avocado Toast

Avocado toast might sound super boring but you can spice it up to your own liking! The biggest mistake I see with avocado toast is not seasoning the avocados. Try out different spices (salt-free) and find out what flavours you like! You can use smoked paprika and sesame oil for a deeper flavour profile or you can use black pepper and a drizzle of hot sauce for a kick! Don’t be afraid to experiment with it. Avocados have healthy fats that are great for the body- specifically the skin, hair, and nails! Another great tip is to put your avocados in the fridge once they feel a little soft. This will help prevent them from ripening so fast and avoid you opening your avocado and finding a bunch of black and brown spots.

2. Cottage Cheese with Fruits and Nuts

I know cottage cheese may be an acquired taste but if you can eat it- start eating more! I am a vegetarian and sometimes I struggle with getting enough protein in my diet (without the use of protein powder) but cottage cheese has helped me tremendously in that aspect. Cottage cheese is low-calorie and packed with protein! As we know, protein and fats keep us fuller for longer which is great if you’re a notorious snacker like myself. So chop up some of your favourite fruit and place it on top of your cottage cheese. Top it off with some healthy nuts and honey then enjoy!

Don’t be afraid to add some superfoods like chia seeds, flax seeds, goji berries, and hemp seeds as well.

3. Smoothies and Smoothie Bowls

If you’re on Instagram, you’ve definitely seen at least one too many smoothies and smoothie bowls. This is not for nothing! Smoothies and smoothie bowls are delicious, nutritious, and quite filling (could even be a meal instead of a snack). A good blender is something I would definitely invest in if you’re starting your healthy eating journey.

Pack up on some frozen fruits and some greens (kale, spinach, etc) and start blending! Smoothie bowls are also great for adding in superfoods and also protein powder, collagen powder, and other supplements!

4. Rice Cakes with Banana, Peanut Butter, and Honey

If you love eating a lot of bread, try opting for using plain rice cakes instead! Plain rice cakes are super low calories but you can dress them up any way you want. Some people even use rice cakes as their base for avocado toast! I prefer to use my rice cakes to be more sweet foods than savoury but do what you like best. My favourite healthy snacks are using rice cakes topped with peanut butter or banana and honey with a sprinkle of cinnamon. It is super delicious and filling and can be a great snack to satisfy your sweet tooth.

5. Hummus and Vegetables

If you prefer more of a savoury snack then this one is for you! Hummus is another high-protein snack because it is pretty much all chickpeas. Carrots, sweet peppers, and celery are great for eating with hummus and are very filling. If you want to take it a step further, try making your own hummus at home. All you need is a food processor or blender, chickpeas, spices to your liking, and lemon juice. Experiment with adding garlic, turmeric, and other cool ingredients and create your own perfect (and secret) recipe!

6. Air-Popped Popcorn

Popcorn as a snack maybe the easiest one on the list! It is a great alternative if you are trying to kick your chip cravings to the curb. Although you may be missing your buttery popcorn, you can add your spices (salt-free) to spice up your snack. A great additive is nutritional yeast! Nutritional yeast is especially great for vegetarians and vegans because it is a rich source of vitamin B-12. Nutritional yeast adds a cheese-like flavour to food and can be incorporated into many different dishes.

7. Yogurt with Fruit and Nuts

A parfait is an easy and healthy snack to have between meals. Try to opt for some sugar-free or Greek yogurt and dress it up with granola, fruits, nuts, and honey! It is very delicious and filling. Parfaits are also another great recipe for you to sneak in your superfoods (flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and goji berries). Gut health is very important for our overall health so try to eat your prebiotics and probiotics! Although not a snack, other foods packed with probiotics include kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, miso, and kefir.

8. Trail Mix

Trail mix is just a mix of nuts and dried fruits (sometimes chocolate). Buy some trail mix or make your own! Trail mix is very high in protein because of its nut content and therefore will keep us fuller for longer. Try to be reasonable in your portion sizes because although nuts are very healthy and essential for us, can be very calorically dense. A great trail mix could be almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, dark chocolate nibs, and dried fruit like raisins. If you’re not a fan of pre-made trail mixes, head to your grocery store and pick out your favourite assortment of nuts and dry fruit, and experiment! Trail mixes are healthy snacks that pack a big satiety punch.

9. Fruit Bowl

This recipe is fairly straightforward- it is just a bowl of your favourite fruits! Sometimes it can be hard to get all of recommend serving of fruits and vegetables so try snacking on them between meals. A fruit bowl is great in the morning and gives you a bunch of energy. You can add a dollop of cottage cheese or peanut butter as a dip for the protein to keep you satisfied for longer as well! Fruits are always healthy snacks- and probably the easiest.

10. Oatmeal Cookies

Although this recipe is not the quickest healthy snack, it is something you can make in larger quantities to save for later! When bananas get too ripe, oatmeal cookies are a great way to use them.

Mash up the bananas until smooth and then add oatmeal until the mixture isn’t sticky anymore (cookie dough texture). From here you can add anything to your liking! You can add your superfoods (flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds), coconut flakes, peanut butter, honey, cinnamon, or dark chocolate nibs. Just try to keep the mixture in its cookie dough texture! Form your cookies or use a spoon and place them on a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake for around 15-18 minutes at 350°C. Cook more or less depending on your preference.

This is an amazing snack that can last you up to a week in the fridge. You can warm it up in the microwave and drizzle some honey on it or you can grab one and go!

Morning Routine For Productivity- Easy Steps For Focus!

Hello Everyone!

Sustained productivity has been my number one hurdle since the beginning of quarantine. I struggled with staying focused, finishing tasks, and even getting started! As I did trial and error for ways to stay productive, all was done to no avail to my productivity issue.

All of a sudden, I came to a huge realization, even with all these tools and external cues, my mindset was not in the right place in the morning! I would fall asleep watching Netflix and would wake up and scroll for hours- essentially dooming my day before it even started!

If you are mentally unready to start your day it will poison your day like a bad apple.

After refining this routine, I am happy to present a morning routine that can maximize your productivity.

So let’s get into the routine!


7:00 am – WAKE UP

I encourage everyone to wake up at least at 8:00 am. This will ensure that you have enough time to get everything done! I am working towards eventually waking up at 6:00 am or 5:30 am so I can maximize my day.

For my alarm, I do not enjoy the loud vibrational sounds so I make sure to turn that off and I use a relaxing sound such as bird noises, rain, or soft piano music. I do not recommend waking up to loud or overly energetic music. It may seem tempting as a means to wake up a heavy sleeper but this will start your morning off in a heightened and anxious state- which we want to avoid!

 7:05 am – DRINK WATER

Next to my bed, I always always always have a reusable bottle filled with water! I drink this as soon as a wake up (around 500-700 ml). This gives me energy, quenches my thirst, and can help with that morning BM. Drinking water in the morning is practiced in Japanese Water Therapy. This is something I have been practicing for about 6 months and I would definitely recommend it to those with digestive issues.

 7:15 am – VISION BOARD

A vision board is a collage of pictures of your goals, dreams, and aspirations! My vision board is filled with pictures of things that I am working towards.

For example, if you were an aspiring chef, your vision board would be filled with pictures of restaurants, dishes, cooking awards, etc. You can have it in any format you like- I personally like to keep it as a pdf locked file on my phone.

When I look through these images I like to imagine myself in the position I want to be in and focus on its inevitability. This provides me with the motivation to get through any hard tasks I have that day, set my mind frame in the right state, and increase my productivity.

7:20 am – YOGA AND/OR MEDITATION

I will usually opt for one of the two. If I am doing yoga that day, I will pull a video on YouTube and follow it. Nothing too strenuous but just enough to wake up my sleepy body and stretch the muscles. I find that throughout the rest of the day I don’t hold as much tension in my shoulders and my body is rarely sore. This is the video I tend to use!

If I am meditating that day, I will lift the blinds of my bedroom window and sit in front of it. I focus on my breath and try to anchor myself to the present. I’ll let my mind go blank and just watch the scenery. Other days, I will be still thinking out my vision board. Either way, I recommend you to take a moment in the morning to do something that requires silence and focus to help clear your mind of any heavy thoughts, tiredness, or anxiety. This will increase your focus and productivity later in the day.

 7:35 am – TIDY UP

Like my mother taught me, I always spread my bed and clean up my room once I get out of bed.

7:40 – MORNING HYGIENE

At this point, I like to brush my teeth and spritz my face with rose water.

 7:45 am – GET READY TO WORKOUT

I always love to work out in the morning. If you don’t enjoy doing intense workouts I would suggest going for a light jog or a walk to get some nice fresh air. I suggest wearing cute clothes that make you feel your best! Throw out those ratty t-shirts that you only wear inside. Working out can increase your alertness and focus therefore improving your productivity.

7:55 am – WORKOUT

I’ve always enjoyed working out but I’ve had to get creative with how I get my exercise in! Almost every day I will exercise at home using resistance bands or anything heavy I can find. Always remember to stretch after your warm-up and after your workout- your body will thank you!

Caroline Girvan is probably the best fitness YouTuber! I am currently undergoing her 10-week Epic II workout program and I would suggest her channel for good quality workouts. If you are more of a beginner Chloe Ting (the queen of quarantine fitness) has great videos as well.

 9:00 am – SHOWER

I have extremely sensitive skin so what I use on my skin is very important. Afterward, I take a 15-minute shower and I love to pump my music while doing so. Finally, I will then do my morning skincare routine.

 9:30 am – START THE DAY

In the right mindset and full of energy, I am now ready to attack the day and focus my productive energy!

What is Audacia?
Audacia is defined as boldness or ambition. This term, Muliebris Audacia, was used in Ancient Rome to defame and control women who showed a drive for more outside of their preordained “maternal duties”.
In the same way, we are taking this term of defamation and using it to our advantage! Embrace your audacia and become the person you are meant to be. Your boldness and ambition are something to be nurtured NOT squandered.
For those who lack this Audacia- do not fret! This is a community and place for you to plant your insatiable seed for success and gain the confidence to live your life in the way you see fit. 
I will be posting content every Sunday at 10am EST regarding beauty, lifestyle, healthy living, and self-improvement!

Feeling Down? Here Are 7 Ways to Instantly Upgrade Your Look!

Hello Everyone!

Today I will be sharing a couple ways for you to instantly upgrade your look!

It can be very easy to get into your own head and you can forget to take care of yourself! Have you found yourself not showering everyday? Have you stayed in your pyjamas all day…even in your zoom meetings? I will be giving you some tips to upgrade your look with ease.

These easy tips will instantly make you look more put together on those days you’re feeling down and out!

So let’s get into it!


  1. Monochromatic Matching Loungewear and Outfits

Let’s be real- loungewear is just acceptable pyjamas, but they are super cute! Wearing one colour can make you look more put-together and classy without having to spend half an hour picking out an outfit. They can also be just as comfortable as those pyjamas you love so don’t hesitate to pick up a pair! Loungewear can come in a sweater/joggers pair, cami/shorts pair, cardigan/cami/shorts pair, and many more- so choose what looks best and feels best for you! Popular loungewear are super cute and tend to have a soft texture (silk, faux fur, fuzzy) and fit in a relaxed way. Here is an example:

2. Filed and Polish Nails

Nails that are filed, shaped, and polished can make you 10x more put together and easily upgrade your appearance! It is not necessary to get a full bio-gel $110 set but you can simply shape your natural nails at home and throw on some clear polish. I love clear polish because it goes with every outfit and makes your nails look very healthy!

If clear polish is too boring for you, choose any colour that suits your style. I love pale pinks, bright reds, and the classic french tip. Bonus points if you match your manicure to your pedicure as well! This makes you look like you take pride in your appearance and is super cute (especially paired with that monochromatic loungewear you’ve picked out). It is a very simple step that make you look fashionable!

3. Slick Low Bun

We all have those bad hair days! But what if i told you I have a certified hair style to combat any unruly and uncooperative hair?

The SLICK (middle part) LOW BUN. Yes! This hairstyle might be the easiest thing to do! The slick low bun is very classy and gives off “boss-girl” vibes or you can add some baby hairs to frame your face and you instantly have the “cute girl next door” vibes! It is quite versatile for a simple hairstyle! If the low bun isn’t your speed, you can throw it a braid in the low ponytail instead for a very trend look. So no more, messy top buns and opt for a middle part slick low bun for a more groomed look! Here are some examples:

4. Simple Jewelry

Small Jewelry pieces upgrade your look within seconds! Wearing small earrings, thin banded rings, and a cute bracelet will take your look from 0 to 10 instantly. It is imperative to not choose tacky, in-your-face pieces (that’s not the look we are going for…today at least) because it will definitely cheapen your look! Choose more small pieces to add a delicate and model look to your appearance. Here are some examples of what I mean:

5. Groom Your Eyebrows

Bushy eyebrows are a trend but this does not mean unkempt eyebrows. If your eyebrows have a life of their own, it’s time to get them in line. Here is a great video for at home eyebrow mapping to make sure your eyebrows are as even as possible (if they are not even don’t fret- it’s normal!). Eyebrows frame your face and groomed eyebrows make a huge difference in your appearance. When you groom your eyebrows, your skin looks clear and bright and it brings harmony to your face!

6. Curl Your Eyelashes

If you love a full natural face of makeup – go ahead! But if you’re not feeling up to it, these next two steps will give you a natural makeup look with no makeup! Curling your eyelashes brings life and a little bit of drama to your eyes (you can add mascara if you dare). In my opinion, eyes and lips are the most alluring features, so focus on these to upgrade your appearance instantly (without the heavy lifting of a full makeup look)! A great tip is to heat your eyelash curler with a blow dryer for around a minute and then curl your lashes (be careful not to burn yourself)! This will ensure your lashes will stayed cute and curled all day!

7. Tinted Lipgloss

After curling your lashes, some natural or tinted lipgloss is the final step to upgrading your appearance. Adding some colour and shine to your lips can make them look healthy and add a bit of sexiness to your look!
