5 Amazing Things You Can Learn Online- How to Turn Your Screen Time Into Productivity!

5 Amazing Things You Can Learn Online- How to Turn Your Screen Time Into Productivity!

Hello Everyone!

Today I will be sharing with you all 5 amazing things you can learn online! Whether you are in lockdown or your area has resumed to normal, these are great skills you can learn in your free time online.

If you are feeling stagnant or unsure in your life or you want to cure that summertime boredom, use your free time to learn or to improve yourself! More often than not, people use their precious free time scrolling through Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter. This has the great potential to start comparisons- which as I have said previously, is the root of a lot of anxiety, depression, and insecurity found in this technological age. Although social media is not inherently evil but if not used correctly (limiting time on apps, following positive and inclusive pages, not comparing yourself to others, not posting to get likes)- you can find it ruining your mental health. I personally do not have any personal social media accounts outside of the ones used to promote this blog. I have gone social media free (Tumblr and Pinterest don’t count for me) for around 7-8 years and I have never looked back. Not knowing all the TikTok trends or who is “subbing” their ex on Twitter has only affected me for the better! I urge everyone to start using social media in a smart way, limit your screen time, and use the internet to research cool hobbies and learn skills!

So let’s get into it the list!

  1. Learn a new language

Although not perfectly executed through the virtual platform- learning languages online is a great use of your time! From Duolingo to HelloTalk, there are new resources available to learn foreign languages. Learning languages have been proven to be great for your brain (especially the aged brain). If you have been out of school for a while, learning languages can not only be an impressive skill to gain but it can help you speak your native tongue in a more eloquent way. Every time I dabble in a new language, I instantly become more aware of how English is structured, new vocabulary words, and their pronunciation. Learning a new language is amazing to kick your brain out of auto-pilot and get it working again! Not to mention how cool you’ll look being able to say “谢谢您,这个菜很好吃!“when you go to a Chinese restaurant! Languages I recommend learning first are French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese (which are all quite similar) and then branch into some more difficult ones such as Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, or German. Apps and websites such as Duolingo, HelloTalk, Memrise, and Coursera are great places to start your language learning journey! Don’t feel obligated to become the next polyglot but just start by learning some basic vocabulary and grammar every day for 5-15 minutes.

If you are not keen on learning a foreign language, you can try to improve your mother tongue! How many times have you heard a word in a movie and had to look it up on Google? Or how many times have you used a word and didn’t know if it was used correctly or if it was grammatically correct? Since many of us use auto-correct when texting, we have naturally lost our ability to spell! Horrible right? To build up your vocabulary (example: stop using “like” as a filler word and “so much” or “literally” to describe everything!) and improve your spelling, I recommend you to increase your reading (Victorian fiction is great) and use Memrise to grow your vocabulary, perfect your pronunciation, and improve your grammar!

2. Learn cursive

This one may seem random but learning cursive or excellent penmanship is a great quality to have. Look- I know we all text, type, and FaceTime BUT the small times when we do write, you don’t want your printing or cursive to look elementary. This is also an announcement to encourage you to write more! Start daily journalling or use a daily planner. As a side note: the therapeutic effects of writing are criminally underrated! The catharsis and relaxation you can achieve through journalling or writing poems and short stories are truly unmatched. You also have the ability to look back and observe your growth in your own words! Also, when you write cards or notes instead of sending messages, it adds such an intimate and classy touch to things.

Back on track. Cursive, when done correctly, is such a beautiful way to write! Calligraphy is also another interesting and cool skill to learn! When you write, like when you speak, you want to convey yourself as clearly AND pleasantly. Write more and be mindful when you write!

3. Learn how to create art

Creating art may be the most effective form of therapy. We all know how to doodle and put a paintbrush or coloured pencil to a canvas but learning technique and colour theory is also quite enriching and informative. If you are a newbie, I recommend dabbling in multiple art forms such as online art, painting, sketching, watercolours, making music, playing instruments, dancing, singing, writing, photography, or film. Find what you love most whether it be one form or several and learn how to refine your techniques through online information.

If you are on the other end like me, having created art for a while but it has recently taken a back seat, I also recommend re-learning your old techniques and learning new ones! I also think it would be a fantastic idea to make an art challenge for yourself.

Example:

I will paint twice a month for 6 months.

I will learn one new dance routine and create my own routine this month.

I will learn to play 2 new songs on the violin by July 1st.

Learn while having fun! I’ve seen people say, “healing as an adult is going back to what you enjoyed as a child” which may be very true. Put aside your pride and embarrassment and get your hands dirty and your body moving with some art. So many people feel as if they must be phenomenal in their execution in order to continue producing art- this is a toxic mindset! Sing badly, make ugly paintings, and dance awkwardly! This is not only about the production and execution but it’s about the peacefulness, confidence, and security that comes from creation.

This is not only about the production and execution but it’s about the peacefulness, confidence, and security that comes from creation.

4. Learn about your casual interests

If you’re already online watching Facebook videos and Instagram stories, dedicate some of that time to learning about some of your interests. What do I mean by this? For example, if you are on Netflix all the time, you can start learning about film production and screenwriting. I personally love watching movies BUT I did not just stop at surface level consumption. I began following YouTubers who discuss how to build a story in a film, the purpose of conflict in a story, and the importance of good cinematography etc. This is not something you must do but it broadens your knowledge of the media or art you are consuming and it becomes something you can talk about intelligently.

I now love it when I am watching a movie and I recognize a camera technique or editing style and its purpose in the storyline. If you love Bella Hadid or Kendall Jenner, you can research and learn about the evolution of the “It Girl”, the history of fashion and runway models, fashion trends, clothing production, fast fashion, and brand history AND on the other hand, you can learn more about fitness and human physiology, proper nutrition and diet culture, and the evolution of the “”””ideal””””” women physiology (and why we need to love our bodies as is).

This is not to say you can not just sit down and watch an episode of The Office without learning how they filmed the entire series but you can educate yourself about some of the things you love!

5. Learn Practical Skills

This may be the most or second most important on this entire list. You need to learn some practical skills! I can not stress this enough but at the risk of sounding like I’ve grown up in the ’50s, this generation NEEDS to learn how to do basic and self-sustaining things. What does this include? This means learning how to: hem clothing, remove ANY type of stain from clothing, cook more than one dish from memory, wash dishes and remove scum, properly clean a house and different surfaces, file taxes, change car tires, contact your car insurance in the case of an accident, do nails/ hair/ makeup, garden, mow a lawn, iron clothes, properly do laundry, do hair removal, clean your shoes (and different materials), wash duvets/ coats/ pillows, properly make cocktails, set a table, pay mortgage/ down-payments (and the rates), request loans, build your credit score (and why is it important), open high-interest savings account, ask for a reference, send a professional email, understand the stock and housing market, administer first aid and CPR, respond if someone has a heart attack, file a lawsuit and etc.

Obviously, many of these are things you may not need to do yourself but these are things you should know how they are done! When I was younger, I was taught how to sew/hem clothing and I was shocked to know some of my friends did not know how to do it. It is important to be able to execute certain things on your own because you won’t always have someone to ask or pay to do it for you (and you’ll also know if they are doing something wrong).

The Journey of Self-Acceptance In The Age of “Glowing Up”- A Deep Dive!

The Journey of Self-Acceptance In The Age of “Glowing Up”- A Deep Dive!

Hello Everyone!

Today I will be discussing the journey of self-acceptance in the age of glowing up. Glowing up can be referred to as the process undergoing an extreme makeover either physically, mentally, and/or emotionally. This new culture has been beneficial in motivating many people to achieve their life-long goals and committing to lifestyle changes. On the other hand, this culture has cultivated a need for everyone to have their own “glow-up”, unwanted or not.

Nothing is black or white and the glow-up culture is not inherently evil.

Audacia strives to provide accurate and contemporary information but this website is not a substitution for personal research and speaking to your health care provider.

So let’s get into the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Physical

The physical glow-up refers to a body transformation. This can be done for health or aesthetic reasons.

The Good

Completely changing your body is a difficult task not many succeed at. It takes dedication, motivation, and consistency. Glow-up culture provides positive motivation through support and visualization. It also brings to attention to those who are demotivated that change is possible if you put your mind to it. It shifts the mindset from complacent and “I can’t change who I am” to “I have the power to create change”. This is a great mindset to have when striving for your personal goals and can lead to success and discipline outside of the physical glow-up.

The Bad

The physical glow-up culture has high standards. Unless you have embarked on a jaw dropping transformation, it is not seen as anything special in particular. “Trendy bodies” are an issue with physical glow up as well. People with normal and healthy bodies now feel pressured to attain the Kendall Jenner figure or Megan Thee Stallion body. Physical glow-up does not speak on self-love or discuss the prevalence of extrinsic motivation in changing your body.

The Ugly

The physical glow-up is focused on results but not the means. This opens up a situation in which people are willing to go to unhealthy extremes just so they can glow up to the unattainable standards set out by social media. The dark side and the struggles are glossed over providing a false narrative to the entire sentiment- which can be especially dangerous to young individuals. There are anorexia starter guides and TikTok on how to lose an unhealthy amount of weight each month and there’s no filter. This is misinformation about the dangers of obesity and its undeniable links to a. Healthy at every size is a false narrative drummed up by unhealthily people to feel accepted. Also, people shame others for being comfortable with the body they love since it does not fit in the model-thin or model-thick archetype.

Mental

The mental glow-up refers to the transformation of a way of thinking. This can be done to raise self-confidence and increase personal security.

The Good

Mental health has been discarded for many years and has (and is still) heavily stigmatized. The newfound openness about personal mental struggles helps people feel supported and motivate them to change their ways of thinking.

The Bad

Most of the mental health glow-up is focused on being a “bad b*tch that doesn’t take sh*t”- which is great for some but not for all. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to learning confidence. The “loud” confidence is now popular but is not the only type. Moving in silence is an art that is lost in this culture because of direct opposition to showing off and bragging. This is also an issue with self-diagnosing mental health issues which can be dangerous, confidence and drinking more water isn’t the cure to all mental health issues.

The Ugly

Most of the mental health glow-up is focused on DIY to get better but this is not possible for everyone. Clinical and medical intervention is needed sometimes and therapy needs to be at the forefront of mental health awareness. Primary information on depression, anxiety, self-harm etc should not be coming from TikTok but from the mouths of health care professionals. Also, with the growing awareness of mental health issues also came the trivial, deprecating humour. This may be a way to cope but can also hurt the cause at the end of the day. Depression is not quirky and having mental health issues shouldn’t be a crutch- unlike what is portrayed on social media.

Emotional

The emotional glow-up refers to the transformation of handling and portraying emotions in difficult situations. This usually involves stoicism and indifference.

The Good

The emotional glow-up is great for over-thinkers. It is teaching us to be unapologetically you and to focus on ourselves. It teaches people not to spend their life thinking about the past and what could have been but to move on and see what can be.

The Bad

This indifference, once again, is not one size fits all. Emotions are now tacky and caring about seemingly trivial things is seen as weak. These things are natural human emotions but the emotional glow-up culture considers it unnecessary. Breaking up with someone or losing a friend is a situation that can cause you to feel anger and sadness but this culture promotes suppression instead of catharsis.

The Ugly

The emotional glow-up has bred a culture in which criticism is impossible and always comes from a place of hate. This can breed narcissism and inept social skills in the workplace etc. Criticism and feedback are crucial in growing and becoming better and if we lose this we lose self-awareness and sensibilities.

My Final Thoughts

Glow-up culture has many benefits but it still has its drawbacks. Nothing in life is perfect, especially something born from social media. Glow-up culture is a great starting point for creating change in your life but one must go beyond the initial point of contact and research, learn, and grow with accredited information.

Morning Routine For Productivity- Easy Steps For Focus!

Morning Routine For Productivity- Easy Steps For Focus!

Hello Everyone!

Sustained productivity has been my number one hurdle since the beginning of quarantine. I struggled with staying focused, finishing tasks, and even getting started! As I did trial and error for ways to stay productive, all was done to no avail to my productivity issue.

All of a sudden, I came to a huge realization, even with all these tools and external cues, my mindset was not in the right place in the morning! I would fall asleep watching Netflix and would wake up and scroll for hours- essentially dooming my day before it even started!

If you are mentally unready to start your day it will poison your day like a bad apple.

After refining this routine, I am happy to present a morning routine that can maximize your productivity.

So let’s get into the routine!

7:00 am – WAKE UP

I encourage everyone to wake up at least at 8:00 am. This will ensure that you have enough time to get everything done! I am working towards eventually waking up at 6:00 am or 5:30 am so I can maximize my day.

For my alarm, I do not enjoy the loud vibrational sounds so I make sure to turn that off and I use a relaxing sound such as bird noises, rain, or soft piano music. I do not recommend waking up to loud or overly energetic music. It may seem tempting as a means to wake up a heavy sleeper but this will start your morning off in a heightened and anxious state- which we want to avoid!

 7:05 am – DRINK WATER

Next to my bed, I always always always have a reusable bottle filled with water! I drink this as soon as a wake up (around 500-700 ml). This gives me energy, quenches my thirst, and can help with that morning BM. Drinking water in the morning is practiced in Japanese Water Therapy. This is something I have been practicing for about 6 months and I would definitely recommend it to those with digestive issues.

 7:15 am – VISION BOARD

A vision board is a collage of pictures of your goals, dreams, and aspirations! My vision board is filled with pictures of things that I am working towards.

For example, if you were an aspiring chef, your vision board would be filled with pictures of restaurants, dishes, cooking awards, etc. You can have it in any format you like- I personally like to keep it as a pdf locked file on my phone.

When I look through these images I like to imagine myself in the position I want to be in and focus on its inevitability. This provides me with the motivation to get through any hard tasks I have that day, set my mind frame in the right state, and increase my productivity.

7:20 am – YOGA AND/OR MEDITATION

I will usually opt for one of the two. If I am doing yoga that day, I will pull a video on YouTube and follow it. Nothing too strenuous but just enough to wake up my sleepy body and stretch the muscles. I find that throughout the rest of the day I don’t hold as much tension in my shoulders and my body is rarely sore. This is the video I tend to use!

If I am meditating that day, I will lift the blinds of my bedroom window and sit in front of it. I focus on my breath and try to anchor myself to the present. I’ll let my mind go blank and just watch the scenery. Other days, I will be still thinking out my vision board. Either way, I recommend you to take a moment in the morning to do something that requires silence and focus to help clear your mind of any heavy thoughts, tiredness, or anxiety. This will increase your focus and productivity later in the day.

 7:35 am – TIDY UP

Like my mother taught me, I always spread my bed and clean up my room once I get out of bed.

7:40 – MORNING HYGIENE

At this point, I like to brush my teeth and spritz my face with rose water.

7:45 am – GET READY TO WORKOUT

I always love to work out in the morning. If you don’t enjoy doing intense workouts I would suggest going for a light jog or a walk to get some nice fresh air. I suggest wearing cute clothes that make you feel your best! Throw out those ratty t-shirts that you only wear inside. Working out can increase your alertness and focus therefore improving your productivity.

7:55 am – WORKOUT

I’ve always enjoyed working out but I’ve had to get creative with how I get my exercise in! Almost every day I will exercise at home using resistance bands or anything heavy I can find. Always remember to stretch after your warm-up and after your workout- your body will thank you!

Caroline Girvan is probably the best fitness YouTuber! I am currently undergoing her 10-week Epic II workout program and I would suggest her channel for good quality workouts. If you are more of a beginner Chloe Ting (the queen of quarantine fitness) has great videos as well.

 9:00 am – SHOWER

I have extremely sensitive skin so what I use on my skin is very important. Afterward, I take a 15-minute shower and I love to pump my music while doing so. Finally, I will then do my morning skincare routine.

9:30 am – START THE DAY

In the right mindset and full of energy, I am now ready to attack the day and focus my productive energy!

How to Create A Vision Board to Turn Your Dreams Into Reality!

How to Create A Vision Board to Turn Your Dreams Into Reality!

Hello Everyone!

Today I will be talking about how to build a vision board to help you to achieve your goals! In my post about morning routine for productivity, I spoke of using a vision board for motivation. Vision boards can be described as a collage of pictures related to your dreams and goals. As previously described, “if you were an aspiring chef, your vision board would be filled with pictures of restaurants, experimental dishes, cooking awards, etc”.

I find that having a vision board allows me to keep motivated by being able to see all the things for aspiring for in one place. When I wake up, I love to quickly look at my vision board and it gets me excited about my day and my goals!

So let’s get into it!

1. Find Themes

First, you will want to start by going into deep thought about your goals and your future. Get a pen and paper and write down the domains of your life where you want to achieve your goals. This can be your 1-year goals or your 5-year goals. Specifically, I prefer to focus on each year at a time and then recreate another vision board for the next new year! Simultaneously, try to be specific but try not to overdo it- these are only the general areas of your life that you want to see improvement or have long-term goals.

A few examples of the domains you want to improve on can be fitness, career, or relationships.

I would write them down in a chart with space below them, as you will be going into specific in the next step.

2. Identify Specifics

Next, you want to write the specific goals you want to achieve underneath each domain. Take your time and truly set your intentions and goals and be specific! An important part of using a vision board is to eliminate doubts about your ability to achieve your goals. Then, under each domain, I would recommend having at least 3-5 goals but feel free to write as much as you want but try not to be redundant.

An example of a few goals could be…

Career

“Starting my own successful online business”

“Getting a promotion (insert specific position) at work (insert specific place)”

Fitness

“Eat foods that nourish my body and enrich my health”

“Work out 6 times a week”

3. Search for Images

Now you have to search for images that relate to your goals and inspire you! The best tool for this would be Pinterest. Also, Instagram or Tumblr is good as well but Pinterest is the best to use when starting fresh. I have an Audacia vision board here which you can use to get started. You can create your boards on Pinterest and save them under your domains you outlined in the first step. I would avoid using specific people and their faces in your vision board. Try not to set goals to be like another person but to be the best version of yourself.

In addition, you can also use word or pages and insert the images you find online. This is what I do and each page represents the area of my life that I have long-term goals.

4. Build Your Board

This is the fun part! Start building your board by adding images that truly inspire you. Try not to overdo it, I usually take a few days to a week to finish crafting my vision board.

5. Finalize

All you have to do now is finalize your board! At this point, I would usually review my board and remove any images that do not truly believe exemplify what it is I’m striving for or any redundant images.

6. Start Achieving Your Goals!

At last, you can start using your vision board as a motivation tool whenever you need that extra boost! Be sure to stay strong in your intentions and to eliminate doubts about your success.
